In 19th and early 20th century America, the era of the single greatest influx
of immigrants to America, the young nation was perceived as the locus
of dreams and yearning. Today, America is widely perceived to be
an enemy of peace and freedom in the world. As a people, we find ourselves
despised for our government’s self-serving interventions in the affairs
of other nations, for our profligate use of natural resources and staggering
emissions of CO2, and for our evident disregard for the opinions of
our world neighbors. Pie Social was an attempt to counter these notions
by revisiting and retooling the historic and worthy pie social through
a public performance and auction presented during the
10th International UNFRINGED Festival, Limerick Ireland in February 2007.
It provided an occasion for inviting and encouraging interactions,
conversations, and understandings between the artist,
volunteers and those who attended and participated in the auction,
the proceeds from which were donated entirely to Irish charities.
