For the Unfringed Festival 07, Pie Social was presented as a performance,
installation and intervention based on the 19th century immigrant pie social.
Working with a group of local Limerick volunteers, American-style pastries
were prepared using organic and local ingredients, drawing on family recipes
which have come down to the artist through several generations of
Midwestern American farm women. Pastries were prepared, baked and
displayed on site in public view at a local cafe in Limerick City.
Employing the services of trained auctioneers, the home-baked
delicacies – apple, pecan, lemon meringue, banana crème, and
pumpkin pies – were publicly auctioned to the highest bidders.
Funds raised from this work were donated to charities,
and relief and aid organizations in Ireland.
