ART ABOUT PLACE

An important aspect of the artist's practice involves nurturing ethnobotanica, including native and heirloom plants maintained by “plant life-support systems”. Grow lights, plant misters, and other environmental controls are powered by sustainable,  renewable energy systems, such as solar and wind power duplicate natural environments in artificial but essentially “green” habitats. In recent installations months were spent researching contemporary patterns of land development relative to particular natural environments, and permission was obtained from local landowners to search for and identify native plants in the landscape. Prior to the arrival of bulldozers and heavy equipment used to crate new housing developments and associated amenities, plant rescue missions began - digging, removing, and potting many important native species. At the close of the botanically-based projects,  rescued plants are donated to individual gardeners in efforts to repopulate ecosystems with native flora.
